Regardless of what problem you intend to tackle on a broad scale—from improving employee performance to a shift in the products and services your company will offer—make sure you have all the information you need to do the skill and knowledge part right.
One of the best ways to gather that information is to conduct a training needs assessment. Yes, there will be a cost but, time and again, the cost to assess and target the right participants and problems is far less than addressing the core issues that have little relevance or impact on your ultimate goal.
A thorough analysis will give you the information that can target the critical few areas of greatest need. Even if you have already identified what needs to change (improved customer service for example), a needs assessment can tell you how and where your efforts will be most effectively focused. Is it a simple matter of providing training to the reps? Maybe they need on-the-job coaching? Perhaps their compensation plan rewards the wrong kind of behavior? And it could be that all three approaches are needed to correct the problem.
That is what a proper assessment can tell you…while saving you time and money in the process.
